Anticipated Movies

Lady Bird

The directorial debut of Greta Gerwig (age 34), yet critics are already praising this movie, alongside the performance of Saoirse Ronan, who is quickly becoming one of the best actresses out there.

Last Flag Flying

The new movie from Richard Linklater. Seems very different from Boyhood and the Before trilogy, and that’s probably the reason I’m curious about this one. Tons of critics love Linklater, but I never understood that level of praise. Probably was a question of style. This being different, I’m on board for a lesson.

Mugen no jûnin

Not quite my type of Samurai movie. But 13 Assassins is revered as one of the best in the genre.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

A new dark-comedy from the mind that brought us In Bruges – Martin McDonagh. I loved that movie. It was full of non-compromise moments and was very refreshing for its time. His next film, Seven Psychopaths, was underwhelming in comparison to what he had done previously. But this new movie seems promising. Nice premise, even nicer cast.

Justice League

Well, Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad were very bad movies. Wonder Woman, this year, was a very good one. So, let’s see?

Wonder

Stephen Chbosky knows how to work with a young cast, as The Perks of Being a Wallflower has shown us. Now he is working with a very promising young actor, Jacob Tremblay, who you might know from Room. Not my type of movie, but still, I’m curious.

Roman J. Israel, Esq.

The second movie of Dan Gilroy, the director who brought us Nightcrawler.

Editor’s note: 10-11-2017, “I Love You, Daddy” used to be on this spot, but since Louis C.K. has been accused of sexual harassment, and he is the mind behind that movie (different from K. Spacey’s role in a film below), the suggestion was removed from this list and this note left here to encourage the reader to not support this person.

Coco

Pixar.

Darkest Hour

Another historical film from Joe Wright. It will probably also be another hit: Atonement, Pride and Prejudice, Hanna and Anna Karenina. This time we have Gary Oldman portraying Winston Churchill.

Call Me by Your Name

One of the highest-rated movies coming from the Film Festivals in Europe. The director is Luca Guadagnino. I’ve only seen a movie from him, A Bigger Splash, but it made me understand that we are talking about a very diligent and bold filmmaker.

The Disaster Artist

Look at this cast. And James Franco directing?!

The Shape of Water

Won the Golden Lion at Venice this year. It’s Guillermo del Toro writing and directing. Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer and Michael Shannon. I bet this is going to be one of 2017’s best.

All the Money in the World

Ridley Scott can’t stop working. He said that The Martian was his last movie. Apparently, it wasn’t. Mark Wahlberg is the bostonian of this one, Kevin Spacey plays Getty (curious to see how the Academy reacts to the recent allegations against the actor) and Michelle Williams, as always, makes this movie a must-watch.

Editor’s note: 9-11-2017, it was announced that Spacey has been replaced by Christopher Plummer in the role of Getty.

I, Tonya

Margot Robbie with her first big role. Critics are saying she delivers a great performance.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

The first movie of this new trilogy was a bit disappointing. Too much fan-service and unoriginal, having in mind the resources they had to work with. Daisy Ridley was the salvation of that movie. After watching the trailer for this second movie, a lot of vibes from Empire Strikes Back were present. On one hand that’s good because Empire is the best SW movie, on the other hand, will this movie be unoriginal again? Still, 2017’s predicted box office leader should be on this list.

Downsizing

Alexander Payne’s movies are some of the best written pieces I’ve seen on the big-screen. This film looks markedly different from the director’s previous work. To be honest, I’m not sold. But my past with Payne obliges me to see it.

The Post

Historical movie, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks. You know the drill.

Happy End

The best coming from Europe: Michael Haneke + Isabelle Huppert.

The Greatest Showman

A musical with Hugh Jackman. The same year as a successful Wolverine movie. I smell a nomination.

Molly’s Game

Aaron Sorkin, one of the best screenwriters in the business, debuts as a director. To help him with that, Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba join the fray. Pretty excited about this one.

Phantom Thread

Daniel Day-Lewis self-proclaimed last movie. Go see it. Oh, the director is Paul Thomas Anderson if you were not convinced.
